A government priority
The Department of Trade and Industry (the dti) has identified the film industry as one of 11 strategic growth areas for South Africa.

In the 2006-2007 year, the industry was worth R2.65 billion in The Western Cape,  R1.1 billion in Gauteng, and R236 million in KZN, with a multiplier effect on the broader economy of R2.5 for every rand spent.

The National Film and Video Foundation is the body mandated to grow the local film industry, while there are film commissions in Gauteng and Cape Town, as well as film offices in Durban, Eastern Cape and Nelson Mandela Bay.
